Life Lessons

  1. Change the way you think to change the way you feel.
  2. Happiness is a choice.
  3. Be very very careful before you get romantically involved with your best friend. The loss of a true friend is a lot more painful than the loss of a lover. Even if you remain friends after a breakup, it just won’t be the same.
  4. There is a big difference between needing something and being needy.
  5. Sometimes, you have to be strong enough to live without the things that you want.
  6. Always always let go. Your touch must be as light as the sunshine. Respect others’ freedom regardless of what you want, or what they want, or what should be. Give them and yourself the precious gift of choice.
  7. You are ultimately alone. It’s not scary, it’s liberating. Learn to look at this the right way and you will know what fearlessness is.
  8. At times, you will still shake with fear. It’s a normal physiological reaction of the machine that houses your mind, while it deals with fear in its own terms. Understand this and do not fear Fear.
  9. Ask why. But also be prepared for answers that do not make sense. They don’t have to.
  10. Ask your best friend for a hug. It can heal everything. This is why you shouldn’t get romantically involved with him (or her). Fiercely guard this hug.
  11. Hug those you love and tell them that you love them. There is no shame in loving.
  12. If someone you love harms you, change your level of involvement with them without changing your love.
  13. If you don’t conform to the rules of others, they may not be there for you when you need them. This applies to friends, family and acquaintances. Except your best friend.
  14. Don’t be under pressure to conform to non-conformity. Certain things that you choose to do may be more rigid than those done by conformists. So what?
  15. Freedom is not the absence of responsibility. It is, in fact, an inescapable sense of responsibility for each and every action that influences your life and those of others around you.
  16. Lose everything. It’s the best thing that can happen to you.
  17. There is nothing better over there. The view is the same, the people are the same.
  18. Home, in actual fact, is a person, not a place.
  19. Cultivate kindness. You won’t always get it back, but when you do, it will take your breath away. You won’t elicit kindness without being kind yourself.
  20. Everybody has it bad and nobody knows shit.
